I agree with Kate. It's important to find a VA who is invested in their business - whether that means they belong to IVAA or other organizations, they attend conferences in their industry, they participate in online groups, etc.
I wouldn't necessarily equate cheap prices with poor quality though. Certainly that's the case a lot of times, but I offer a pretty inexpensive rate and I have people I consider to be some of the top bloggers/internet marketers in the country as my clients. If no one took a chance on anyone, where would we be? I'm pretty glad that my first client, David Risley (http://www.davidrisley.com), took a chance on a nobody like me! :)

Good article. I would like to add that a better place to find a VA might be IVAA.org - they do not put your money in escrow but they issues ethics and other tests to their members which will help you to make a better partnering decision in the future. Also, you can work out a limited time trial without a huge investment with most VA's to see if you are a good fit for EACH OTHER.

People shopping for price often go with the cheaper (=inexperienced) Virtual Assistant. Sites like Elance are the first place inexperienced VA's go, (maybe the 2nd after Craigs list). Selecting a VA from IVAA means they are invested in their business enough to pay the membership dues and participate in the organization's guidelines and rules. You are much less likely to get a moonlighting college student or someone who only has access to a computer at the local library, know what I mean?

I'm glad you weren't turned off and wish you good luck in the future.
